ERP DATA STATUS AND CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

Most of this publications population data for September quarter 2001 onwards are based on the 2006 Census. This publication contains final, revised and preliminary data. For the current status refer to paragraph 7 of the Explanatory Notes.

BIRTH AND DEATH REGISTRATIONS

The number of birth and death registrations in all states and territories for the September quarter 2007 is higher than usual. Amendments to the A New Tax System (Family Assistance) Act 1999 which took effect from 1 July 2007 requires the registration of, or application for registration of the birth of a child as a condition for applying for the Baby Bonus. In addition to increases in the timeliness and completeness of birth registration applications, strategies have been implemented by some state and territory Registrars of Births, Deaths and Marriages, which have further improved on the timeliness of both birth and death registration processing.
